Sidney Crosby Outlines His Plan For Future Contract Extensions
Sidney Crosby revealed how he plans to approach extension talks with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He has a plan.
Sidney Crosby says he plans to take a year-by-year approach to his future with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but clarified that it’s not a signal he’s considering retirement.
In a recent article on The Athletic, Josh Yohe cited comments from the Pittsburgh Penguins captain who confirmed he’s not thinking about playing only one or two more seasons, but that he’s going to go with contract extensions that give him the most flexibility.
With one year left on his contract, Crosby explained the short-term mindset is about giving the team and himself options as both manage the salary cap and roster changes. For the Penguins, they can feel confident that Crosby will try to work with them to maintain a competitive advantage when it comes to his AAV. For Crosby, if he’s not sure he likes where things are headed, he can pivot if need be.

“It’s pretty obvious why I would just go year to year with the contracts,” he said. “At the end of the day, I’m just going to do what’s best for the team. It’s got nothing to do with how long I want to play. It’s not like that at all.”
The veteran captain remains highly productive, coming off his 21st straight point-per-game season, and indicated he still wants to play as long as possible. He and GM Kyle Dubas have yet to discuss an extension, but talks are expected later this summer. If history suggests anything, he could be looking at a one-year, $8.7 million deal.
Crosby Intends to Play Several More Seasons
Crosby emphasized his priority is helping the Penguins contend, not setting a timeline for his career. Energized by the team’s return to the playoffs, he appears motivated to keep going, potentially climbing even higher on the NHL’s all-time scoring list. “I definitely want to keep playing for as many years as possible,” he said.
