NHL Trade Talk Recap: Maple Leafs, Oilers & Senators Odd Fit?

The Maple Leafs may already have their deadline answer, Edmonton eyes a familiar Hyman-style fit, and Ottawa considers a Laine gamble.

In today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap (August 23, 2026), there’s lots of “what if” energy in today’s roundup. The Maple Leafs might’ve already solved a problem before the trade deadline even shows up. The Oilers could be about to run back the Hyman formula with a new guy. And the Senators are eyeing a boom-or-bust bargain bin move on a former 40-goal scorer nobody else wants right now.

Could Ben Danford Save the Leafs From Their Deadline Curse?

Every February, it seems like the same script for Toronto. They need a shutdown defenceman, the market’s already picked clean, and they end up overpaying for some rental who bolts in July anyway. But this year might actually be different, and it’s not because of anything happening at the deadline. It’s because of a 20-year-old already in the system. Ben Danford was a bit of a surprise pick back in 2024. Several scouts ranked him way lower than Toronto did. But then he showed up in the Marlies’ Calder Cup run and looked completely unbothered playing against grown men. Nothing flashy, just calm and steady. Often, that’s the hardest thing for young defencemen to figure out.

That steadiness could end up being a big deal for Toronto’s trade leverage. If Danford keeps developing, the Maple Leafs might not be the desperate team overpaying for a rental blueliner in March. They’d already have one, on the cheap, in-house. That takes them out of panic mode and lets them actually pick their spots instead of getting squeezed at the deadline. Sometimes the best trade story of the year is the one a team never has to make.

Could Michael Bunting Be Edmonton’s Next Hyman-Style Add?

There’s a fun full-circle story brewing. Michael Bunting basically replaced Zach Hyman in Toronto years ago, and now there’s real chatter he could follow Hyman to Edmonton. The fit makes sense. The Oilers have quietly lost their “muck it up” identity with Perry, Kane, Desharnais, and Nurse all gone. Bunting’s exactly the irritating, net-front, forechecking style they’re missing. He’s also reportedly training with McDavid and Hyman this summer, which is about as strong a hint as you can get without an actual signing.

The pieces line up too well to ignore. Edmonton’s got the cap space (over $4.7 million), and Bunting’s coming off a contract year looking for a short-term “prove it” deal. And he’s already shown he can thrive on a star’s wing after his run with Auston Matthews in Toronto. If this actually happens, it wouldn’t just be a depth move. It’d be Edmonton doubling down on the gritty, forecheck-first identity that’s carried them the last two playoff runs.

Could a Cheap Patrik Laine Gamble Pay Off for Ottawa?

Patrik Laine’s had a rough stretch. He dropped from a 140-goal scorer in his first few NHL seasons to barely playing last year. Mostly he was stuck on injured reserve in Montreal with just five games and one assist. But here’s the interesting part. It’s late August, and he’s still unsigned. That likely means his market has basically dried up, and that’s exactly the kind of situation where a team like Ottawa could scoop him up on the cheap.

The fit actually makes sense. The Senators are already a solid, well-rounded team. More pure goal-scoring is the one thing that could push them past the first round. If Laine can even get back to the 20-goal pace he hit in his last full season, that’s real value. It would work well on a bonus-heavy, near-minimum contract instead of the $8.7 million he used to make. He could be low risk, potentially a nice reward. Would it be the kind of low-cost swing that could quietly matter come playoff time?
