Did the Maple Leafs Make Their Biggest Trade Deadline Move?

Ben Danford could change the Maple Leafs’ trade deadline plans. If he’s ready, Toronto may finally have the defenseman it needs.

Every year around February, it’s the same story with the Toronto Maple Leafs: they need a shutdown defenseman, the trade market gets picked over, and Toronto ends up overpaying for some rental who leaves in July anyway. It’s basically become tradition at this point. But there’s a decent chance that changes this season, and it’s got nothing to do with free agency or a trade. It’s because of a 20-year-old the Maple Leafs already have in the system.

When He Was Drafted, Danford Was a Bit of a Reach

This early in his career, Ben Danford wasn’t supposed to be turning heads. He went 31st overall in 2024, a pick that felt like a bit of a stretch at the time — Bob McKenzie had him ranked 54th, and a few other scouts had him even lower still. The scouting report on him was straightforward: strong defensively, not much offensively. He wasn’t a name anyone expected to matter for the big club anytime soon.

Then he joined the Marlies’ playoff run and looked completely at home going up against grown men in a Calder Cup chase. Nothing showy about it — just calm, steady hockey. And that’s the part that usually takes young defensemen years to actually develop, if it ever comes at all.

Why Might Danford Matter So Much at the Trade Deadline?

Here’s why that actually matters for trade season specifically. Toronto has spent years being the team that shows up at the deadline needing a right-shot shutdown defenseman. They’ve had to pay a premium for it because everybody knows they need one. That’s a rough spot to negotiate from. If Danford keeps developing the way he did this spring, Toronto might not be that desperate team this time around. Instead of trading a first-round pick or a top prospect for a rental defenseman in March, they might not need to. They’d have one already, and a cheap one on his entry-level deal at that.

That’s a real shift in trade leverage. Teams that don’t need to make a move at the deadline get to sit back and pick their spots. They don’t have to overpay out of panic. If Danford earns his way into the lineup at some point this season because of an injury and doesn’t look out of place, Toronto suddenly has way more flexibility in how aggressive — or not — they need to be in trade talks this winter.

Sometimes the biggest trade story of the season is the trade a team doesn’t have to make.
