Swap Matthews for Point — Wild Idea, But Kinda Makes Sense

Okay, here’s a trade thought: Auston Matthews to Tampa, Brayden Point to Toronto. Both guys had off-ish seasons by their standards, so their trade value isn’t sky-high right now, and Nick Wize tossed the swap out there as a fix for both teams’ problems.

Point’s 30, under a big deal for four more years and brings Cup experience. He’s the kind of vet Toronto could use if they’re trying to win now. Matthews is younger, with two years left, and a huge scoring upside that could help Tampa get younger and shake things up. The problem is Toronto just won the draft lottery, so unless Matthews wants out, a swap like this suddenly looks a lot less likely.

Bottom line: it’s fun to imagine, and there’s logic on both sides, but timelines and cap/contract stuff make it messy. If Matthews stays in Toronto to play with a new top pick, forget it. If he wants out and both teams get brave, stranger trades have happened. Just don’t bet on it without a ton of moving parts lining up.

Is Evander Kane Still Worth It? Short Answer: Maybe

Evander Kane’s time in Vancouver never really clicked the way people hoped. He showed flashes and reached the 1,000-game milestone, but 71 games, 13 goals, and 31 points isn’t the kind of return you expect from a player making $5.125 million. A lot of nights, he looked a step slow, and both the eye test and the numbers pointed to the same conclusion: it just wasn’t enough.

The trade deadline was the rude reality check. Teams barely raised a hand. That silence says his market isn’t the one it used to be. At this point, he’s a low-risk, high-conditional sort of option. He might fit a playoff club that wants depth scoring, is willing to eat some salary, or with a GM who thinks a change of scenery and a tight role might squeeze more out of him.

There might still be a buyer out there, but the list feels pretty small. Expect short-term deals or PTO conversations. If anyone takes a chance, it’ll probably be a team with management that already knows him well and believes he can still fill a very specific role.
