Oilers Could Be Eyeing Bruce Cassidy, Future of Kris Knoblauch Sketchy

The Edmonton Oilers are heading into what could be one of the most important offseasons in franchise history, and suddenly, the conversation surrounding head coach Kris Knoblauch is beginning to intensify. Over the last 24 hours, the conversation has shifted from questions about possible changes to many analysts and insiders expecting them.

Following Edmonton’s disappointing first-round exit to the Anaheim Ducks, insider Darren Dreger reported during an appearance on Sekeres & Price that there is “a ton of heat” on Knoblauch right now. Dreger also noted that some of that pressure is connected to the availability of former Vegas Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy.

That report immediately turned heads across the NHL.

Frank Seravalli is also reporting possible changes, noting, “It’s more likely than not that Knoblauch and his staff are sent packing.”

For a team built around Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, anything short of a Stanley Cup run is going to raise serious questions. After looking inconsistent throughout the regular season and then falling apart in key moments during the playoffs, the Oilers now appear to be evaluating every aspect of the organization — including the coaching staff.

Oilers Looked Average for Much of the Season

The biggest concern surrounding the Oilers this season was the lack of consistency.

Edmonton never truly looked like the dominant contender many expected them to be entering the year. There were tiny stretches where the club looked dangerous offensively, but those moments were often followed by defensive breakdowns, questionable lineup decisions, and an inability to close out games.

Even during the regular season, the Oilers often looked more like a middle-of-the-pack team than a legitimate Stanley Cup favourite.

That carried over into the playoffs.

Despite scoring first in multiple games during their series against Anaheim, Edmonton struggled to protect leads and failed to make meaningful adjustments as the series shifted in the Ducks’ favour. The Oilers looked frustrated, predictable, and at times completely outmatched structurally.

While injuries certainly played a role, the coaching staff is naturally going to face criticism when a roster with this much talent exits in the first round.

Knoblauch’s Coaching Staff Decisions Under Scrutiny

This season was also significant because it marked the first time Knoblauch truly had control over building his own coaching staff in Edmonton.

The results were underwhelming.

The Oilers’ penalty kill took a noticeable step backward, player deployment became a constant talking point, and several depth players struggled to establish defined roles throughout the season. Edmonton continued to repeat many of the same mistakes game after game without making major tactical adjustments.

That has led many around the league to wonder if the message behind the bench has simply gone stale. Sometimes a team needs a different voice, especially one with championship pedigree.

Bruce Cassidy Makes Too Much Sense for Edmonton

That is where Cassidy enters the conversation.

Cassidy is one of the most respected coaches in hockey and led the Golden Knights to a Stanley Cup Championship in 2023. His teams are known for structure, accountability, and defensive discipline — all areas in which the Oilers struggled this season.

If Edmonton decides to move on from Knoblauch, it would make perfect sense for management to target a coach who has proven he can guide a veteran core through the pressure of winning a Stanley Cup. Cassidy fits that description better than almost anyone currently available.

The Oilers are no longer in a position where patience is the priority. McDavid and Draisaitl are in the middle of their prime years, and the organization cannot afford another wasted season.

That is why the growing speculation surrounding Cassidy and Edmonton feels legitimate.

With Dreger reporting that there is real smoke surrounding the situation, the Oilers could be preparing for a major change behind the bench sooner rather than later.

Cassidy’s record isn’t much of an improvement over Knoblauch. I think there is something to be said for longevity in a coach (Jon Cooper, Jared Bednar, Rod Brind’Amour) than changing out the coach every 2 years or so. I would like to see more fire come from Knoblauch but I think he could do that with some focus next season.
