NHL Trade Talk Recap: Canadiens & Oilers Surprise Trade Win

Three NHL moves tell a bigger story about how smart front offices look beyond the immediate headline of the Canadiens and the Oilers.

In today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap (August 3, 2026), we’re looking at three recaps from different teams. But they’re really connected by the same theme of front offices making moves with the bigger picture in mind. The Canadiens signing Radulov shows how one bold “win-now” move can become a turning point even if it’s short-lived. The no-move clause story is basically a reminder that contracts can get tweaked in sneaky ways. So teams might not be as stuck as we think. And the Oilers Nurse’s trade is the perfect example of what happens when the headline win (salary cap space) is obvious. But the real value can also be in the return, like young defenders who could matter later.

Radulov in Montreal: Big Hope, Short Stay

When Alexander Radulov first landed with the Canadiens, it felt like Montreal was finally making a real “win-now” move. They hadn’t really had the right-wing depth to consistently generate offence. So Bergevin swung for an experienced, skilled player on a one-year deal that cost $5.75 million. If he stayed productive and fit the lineup, it was supposed to be a nice bargain.

The plan was simple. Radulov was expected to add scoring and give Montreal another skilled option in its top six. The real question was never whether he had talent. It was whether he could land in the right role with the team’s other pieces. Could he mesh well with the guys already driving the offence? In the end, one season turned into a lasting memory, even though Radulov only stayed for that year before moving to Dallas. It didn’t “flip the switch,” but it did mark a turning point for Montreal’s direction, and years later that same evolution still shows up as the Canadiens keep trying to take the next step.

The “No-Move” Clause Could Get a Sneaky Loophole

With all the trade-request drama lately, there’s a contract detail people are looking at more now. And it might change how no-move clauses work. The idea is that teams and players can already tweak the wording of a no-move/no-trade clause so it doesn’t protect against everything, depending on the situation.

Basically, a player might sign a no-move clause, but a specific protection could get removed or traded out in certain cases. For example, when Charlie Coyle re-signed with Columbus, his no-move clause included an add-on that removes his automatic protection if the league expands. So if that happens, the team doesn’t have to protect him the same way as before.

If this keeps spreading, it gives teams a bit more power when a player wants out. Because the team can say, “You can have the clause… but only up to a point.” It’s still all negotiable, and the league has to approve the exact wording, but it doesn’t sound like the NHL needs to change any big rules.

Nurse’s Departure Feels Great—but the Return Matters Too

Edmonton finally moved Darnell Nurse after years of fans begging for it. And once the trade happened, everyone basically cared about the cap space. The relief was huge because for the first time in a while, the Oilers actually had room to breathe again. On top of that, Nurse’s playoff struggles the last few runs made it feel like this was overdue.

But while the headlines were all about what Edmonton saved, the trade return is the story people are missing. They didn’t just flip cap. The Oilers landed Shakir Mukhamadullin, a big, skating left-shot defender who can kill penalties and could grow into a role for them. They also got Zack Sharp, a young prospect they’ve reportedly had an eye on for a while. So cap relief was the obvious win, but the Oilers also brought in actual pieces that could matter way more than people realize right now.
