It didn’t take long for hockey fans to tear apart one of the more bizarre Connor McDavid rumors to surface this offseason.
On Monday morning, an X account claiming to have inside information posted that McDavid intends to sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs when his contract with the Edmonton Oilers expires, provided he isn’t traded beforehand. The post even claimed the information came from “a source very close to the player,” adding that “no other teams interest him” and that he wants to “finish his career in Toronto.”
The problem? There isn’t any credible reporting to support the claim. Instead, fans immediately recognized the post for what it appeared to be—a baseless rumor designed to generate engagement.
Fans Weren’t Buying It
The reaction in the comments was almost unanimous, with many mocking both the claim and the account behind it.
One fan joked: “He wants a cup. He has a better chance of that signing in Columbus.”
Another questioned the credibility of the report altogether. “Every single NHL team would be interested in him if he was available for trade. What kind of crack are you smoking?”
Others didn’t hold back either. “Master troll job this account.”
“Crazy! You’d think he’d want to go somewhere that actually has a chance to win rather another poverty franchise.”
Perhaps the most telling response came from another user who wrote: “Nothing you ever said has come true. You should delete your account.”
The overwhelming reaction wasn’t Leafs fans celebrating—it was hockey fans laughing at how unsupported the rumor was.
Nothing Suggests McDavid Wants to Leave Edmonton
While speculation surrounding McDavid’s future will continue for the next few seasons, there’s been virtually nothing publicly indicating he wants out of Edmonton. In fact, the opposite has been true. McDavid has repeatedly spoken about his commitment to winning with the Oilers and the organization has built a Stanley Cup contender around him. Edmonton has reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in the last 3 years and remains firmly in its championship window.
Away from the rink, McDavid has also established deep roots in Edmonton. He built a home in the city, while his wife, Lauren Kyle, has built multiple successful businesses there, including her interior design company and hospitality ventures.
Following the 2024 and 2025 season’s heartbreaking Stanley Cup Final loss, McDavid also penned an emotional open letter thanking Oilers fans for their unwavering support and expressing his appreciation for the city. Nothing in his public comments has suggested he’s looking for an exit.
Could McDavid eventually test free agency if Edmonton fails to win? It’s impossible to completely rule out. But automatically connecting him to the Maple Leafs without credible reporting or evidence has become an annual tradition on social media. If McDavid’s priority is winning—as he’s consistently stated—there’s also a fair question to ask: if Toronto takes another step backward this season, why would that suddenly become his preferred destination?
Until legitimate insiders report otherwise, fans were right to treat this latest rumor exactly as they did: with plenty of skepticism—and plenty of jokes.
