Most Anticipated Games of the 2026-27 NHL Season

The NHL officially unveiled its 2026-27 regular-season schedule, and it didn’t take long for fans to begin circling dates on the calendar. With the league expanding to an 84-game schedule, several blockbuster matchups stand out, whether they’re fueled by Stanley Cup rivalries, superstar debuts, outdoor spectacles, or emotional homecomings.

Here are some of the games that should be must-watch television throughout the upcoming season.

Hurricanes Raise the Banner Against Panthers

The season opens on Sept. 29 with one of the league’s biggest storylines as the Carolina Hurricanes host the Florida Panthers in Raleigh.

Carolina will celebrate its Stanley Cup championship with a banner-raising ceremony after defeating Florida in the 2026 Stanley Cup Final. The matchup also renews one of hockey’s newest rivalries, as the Panthers eliminated the Hurricanes in both the 2023 and 2025 Eastern Conference Finals before Carolina finally broke through last spring. Few opening-night games have carried this much emotion and significance.

Gavin McKenna’s NHL Debut

One day later, all eyes could be on Toronto.

The Maple Leafs are expected to unveil first-overall pick Gavin McKenna against the Montreal Canadiens before he potentially faces reigning Calder Trophy winner Matthew Schaefer and the New York Islanders the following evening. McKenna enters the NHL with enormous expectations after being selected first overall in the 2026 Draft, making his first two games among the most anticipated events of opening week.

Brady Tkachuk Returns to Ottawa

On Oct. 21, Brady Tkachuk will make what is sure to be an emotional return to Ottawa after being traded to the Panthers earlier this offseason.

The former Senators captain spent eight seasons leading the franchise before joining his brother Matthew in Florida. Senators fans will undoubtedly give their former leader a memorable reception, while the Panthers will look to spoil the occasion in one of the season’s most emotionally charged contests.

Outdoor Hockey Returns

Outdoor games remain some of the NHL’s premier events, and the 2026-27 campaign features several marquee showcases.

The Montreal Canadiens and Winnipeg Jets headline the Heritage Classic at Princess Auto Stadium on Oct. 25, bringing outdoor hockey back to Manitoba for the first time since 2020.

Later in the season, Utah Mammoth hosts its first-ever outdoor game against the Colorado Avalanche in the Winter Classic at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Dec. 31. Meanwhile, the Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars will square off at AT&T Stadium in the Stadium Series on Feb. 20, featuring two Western Conference contenders on one of hockey’s biggest stages.

Crosby vs. McDavid Never Gets Old

Even as Sidney Crosby enters his 22nd NHL season, any matchup against Connor McDavid remains appointment viewing.

The Pittsburgh Penguins visit the Edmonton Oilers on Jan. 3 in what could be another memorable chapter between two of the greatest players of their generations. Crosby continues to defy Father Time, while McDavid remains the league’s premier offensive force. With each passing season, opportunities to watch the two future Hall of Famers share the ice become increasingly rare.

Global Series Headlines International Schedule

The NHL also continues its international push with regular-season games in both Finland and Germany.

The Carolina Hurricanes and Seattle Kraken will meet twice in Finland in November, while the Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators travel to Germany in December. Those contests will give European fans the opportunity to watch stars like Sebastian Aho, Tim Stützle, Connor Bedard, and Kaapo Kakko on home soil.
