Morgan Frost’s Flames Future Just Got a Little More Interesting

Morgan Frost looked like a likely trade candidate, but Calgary’s extension talks raise a question about his future with the Flames.

The Calgary Flames didn’t exactly look like a team ready to make commitments when they opened the season with five straight losses. Things were looking pretty bleak. But hockey seasons have a way of changing direction, and Calgary has started to show some signs of life. Morgan Frost has been part of that improvement, and now there’s an interesting question about his future.

Frost had been appearing on the trade radar, with Chris Johnston identifying him as a potential trade candidate. That made some sense. He’s 27, has experience, and could interest teams looking for help down the middle. For a rebuilding club like Calgary, moving a player like that for younger assets or draft picks would hardly be surprising.

Then came the latest report from Pierre LeBrun that extension discussions have taken place.

Could Morgan Frost Have a Longer-Term Future in Calgary?

That’s an interesting development. It doesn’t necessarily mean the Flames are ready to sign Frost long-term. Sometimes these conversations can serve more than one purpose. A club might explore an extension while also trying to establish a player’s value around the league. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to wonder whether Calgary is keeping its options open.

But there’s another possibility worth considering. Perhaps the Flames are beginning to see Frost as someone worth keeping. In Friday’s 6-2 win over Seattle, he scored a power-play goal and added an assist. He’s now got four goals and five assists in 13 games. Those aren’t superstar numbers, but they’re useful contributions from a middle-six centre who can also help on the power play.

Why Keeping Frost Might Make Sense for Calgary

Calgary needs players who can provide some offence. The Flames aren’t exactly overflowing with established scoring options, and Frost is getting opportunities to show what he can do. Here’s the thing about rebuilding. Eventually, a team needs more than prospects and draft picks. It needs players who can help young talent develop, provide some stability, and make the club competitive again. Not everyone approaching their late twenties has to be moved simply because the team isn’t ready to contend.

That doesn’t mean Frost will be untouchable. If another club comes along with an attractive offer, Calgary would have to listen. But perhaps the Flames are discovering that keeping a useful player can be just as important as finding another draft pick.

For now, Frost’s future remains an open question. The interesting part is that Calgary may have more than one good reason to keep him around.
