Sharks Linked to Red Wings’ Simon Edvinsson: Why Did an Insider Mention Celebrini?
Pierre LeBrun reports up to 10 teams, including the Sharks, are in on Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson. Here’s what it could cost.
The Simon Edvinsson trade market is crowded, and the San Jose Sharks are in the mix. Interestingly, the defenseman was being linked to the Sharks in some trade discussions, and of all the names to pop up in the report, it was Macklin Celebrini‘s.
Why?
TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported on Insider Trading that up to 10 teams remain involved in talks for the Detroit Red Wings defenseman. The Sharks are among the interested clubs, and LeBrun confirmed San Jose has spoken with Detroit about a possible deal. The return, apparently, would be a forward off the Sharks roster.
Detroit hasn’t given up on a new deal. LeBrun said that GM Shawn Horcoff still wants to sign the 23-year-old restricted free agent and is holding out hope, even as trade conversations continue. But if he has to trade Edvinsson, the Red Wings want a good piece back, and the Sharks have plenty of them.
LeBrun called the Sharks an intriguing fit, noting Edvinsson would fill a hole on their blue line. The Red Wings, meanwhile, would reportedly like several forwards on San Jose’s roster, with Macklin Celebrini the exception. It’s not as though anyone would have assumed Celebrini would be a topic of discussion for the Sharks in this trade. However, moving a forward off the roster that might play with the superstar has its consequences too.
Edvinsson would be a big get, but the Sharks don’t want to sacrifice chemistry to land the defenseman.

Celebrini Comments On His Split with Will Smith
Celebrini recently weighed in on the Sharks’ decision to split him up from Will Smith after a 2-0 loss to Buffalo. “Reality was, we weren’t really creating much. Or, we weren’t scoring. When things aren’t working, you got to switch it up a little bit. I think it’s nothing really to read too much into.”
That won’t stop people from reading into things. Will Smith would be the Red Wings aiming for the stars in the trade ask. It seems unlikely the Sharks would consider it. If they did, you can imagine it wouldn’t sit well with Celebrini.
