Flames and Gaudreau to Keep Talking Contract During Season

Johnny Gaudreau and the Calgary Flames will continue to talk contract during the season.

While the Calgary Flames and Johnny Gaudreau still haven’t found common ground on a contract extension, the two sides have been diligently working on a deal and trying to come to some sort of middle ground that will keep the skilled forward a part of the Flames’ roster moving forward. In fact, Gaudreau is so open to sticking with the Flames, reports are his agent will continue to talk with Calgary during the year to work something out.

Oftentimes, when an extension can’t be reached prior to the season starting, agents tell the teams that a player won’t be talking about a new contract as the games are ongoing. That was something Mattias Ekholm did with the Nashville Predators and a last-minute contract was finalized before the regular season opened and other players have gone the same route. In fact, Gaudreau’s new agent, Lewis Gross has been known for doing just that. When William Nylander entered the final year of his contract Gross, as per his client, cut off talks with the Maple Leafs.

Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic is reporting that he’s found no signs of Gaudreau wanting to follow a similar path. Gaudreau has publicly stated he wants to sign past this year in Calgary and the NHL insider believes that Gross and Flames management will continue to dialogue.

Keeping Things Private

One thing that was also noted by LeBrun is that both sides do not intend to talk about how the negotiations are going. Both sides would prefer to keep chatter of an extension private as neither wants Gaudreau’s situation to be a distraction for the team.

Should discussions go sideways, this is not something the Flames want to be known either. The best thing for Calgary is that they have the option to trade Gaudreau before he becomes a free agent and losing leverage on a deal doesn’t make sense. Gaudreau would become one of the hottest trade targets this season if he were made available.
