Coyotes’ GM Has Spoken to Chychrun About Potential Trade Scenarios
The Arizona Coyotes are keeping defenseman Jakob Chychrun in the loop about trade talks involving him. Does that up the odds of a deal?
The Arizona Coyotes are trying to be upfront and honest with defenseman Jakob Chychrun when it comes to a potential trade. While it’s been said that the Coyotes aren’t actively shopping Chychrun, there is talk that the blueliner is garnering a ton of interest and recent reports are that GM Bill Armstrong is keeping Chychrun up to speed on most of his conversations with other teams.

This is not to say that Armstrong is running every little thing by his blueliner. That said, the indication seems to be that he doesn’t want Chychrun to be blindsided by any rumors of conversations and wants him to know what’s going on when it comes to his personal situation this season. As per Jose M Romero of AZ Central, Armstrong noted during a spot on @AZSports that he has been direct with Chychrun about teams looking to make a trade for him.
While the ask is said to be enormous and some teams have been scared away because of the Eichel-like return the Coyotes want, the GM noted that he has to do his job and listen to all offers. Armstrong added, “If there’s something on the table that we can’t refuse that’s going to put this club in the right direction with some impact players, I certainly have to listen.” He wants Chychrun to know that’s where the team stands, but also that the Coyotes aren’t looking to move him just to move him or that they’ll take anything less than a franchise-changing offer.
Despite the ask, there are teams that will inquire and there are teams that would certainly be willing to give up a ton of assets to acquire Chychrun. He’s under team control at a reasonable price for three more seasons and he’s a reliable minute-munching defenseman who scored 18 goals and 41 points last season as a defenseman. He’s just 23 years old and he’s the perfect fit for a lot of teams that are doing more than looking for a rental this season.
Chychrun to Be Part of the Trade Process
Even though the player has no trade control as part of his contract, it sounds like the Coyotes are making him part of this process, simply out of respect for how much they appreciate what he does and who he is to the franchise. He has to hear the noise and see the writing on the wall, but the club doesn’t want him to feel as though something is inevitable.
At the end of the day, the Coyotes need to do what’s best for the club. That said, if Chychrun isn’t dealt, the team and the player have to move forward together.
