Canucks Shop Carson Soucy in Trade, Oilers Had Past Interest

The Vancouver Canucks are making Carson Soucy available in a trade and the Edmonton Oilers showed past interested in the defenseman.

Back in September of 2022, the Edmonton Oilers got extremely close on a trade for Carson Soucy. In fact, the Oilers were so confident a deal was nearly done that they had a jersey made up for him in the event they could finalize the trade and get him over to play a game.

He was one of four trades the Oilers were looking at. At the time, we wrote:

“Soucy is a defensemen out of the Seattle Kraken organization that many insiders linked to the Oilers. He was deemed potentially the best fit for what Edmonton needed on their back end to make a playoff push. He has one year left on his current deal at $2.75 million and will be a UFA at the end of this season.” At the time, he was with the Seattle Kraken. He’s since signed with the Vancouver Canucks and has two seasons remaining on a deal that pays him $3.25 million per season.

It’s been a few years, but it appears the Oilers might get another crack at Soucy if there’s still interest there.

Soucy Is Available For Trade Out of Vancouver

It is being reported by Elliotte Friedman that Soucy is being shopped by the Canucks. Canucks reported, and podcast host Rick Dhaliwal adds, “Carson Soucy has a full no-trade clause this year, next year a 12 team no trade. The arrival of Marcus Pettersson and the improved play of Elias Pettersson has made the left side tougher to crack for Soucy.” He also tweeted, “Marcus Pettersson has pushed Carson Soucy to the 3rd pair. I wonder if the Canucks make Soucy available around the league.”

Soucy is a left-shot defenseman. Ideally, the Oilers would like a right-shot guy. But Soucy is also a gritty player who doesn’t mind getting his nose dirty, and the Oilers are reportedly open to adding to either side. Knowing they can move pieces around, a general upgrade is more important than the side that defenseman plays.

Would Soucy be open to a move to Edmonton? They’re a contender. They lack the drama that has currently surrounded the Canucks organization. They’ve also got a slot for him potentially on the second pair. He’s getting squeezed out of Vancouver and was a healthy scratch. Friedman expects that the Canucks and Soucy will try to find a fit.

The Canucks ideally don’t want to trade the defenseman to a division rival, but it’s not unheard of.
