Leafs and Andersen Have No Plan To Talk Contract During the Season

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Frederik Andersen have both decided how they’ll deal with his pending contract extensin during the season.

As the 2020-21 NHL season rolls along, there will be no shortage of talk about how Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Frederik Andersen performs. If he plays well, Leafs Nation will immediately start calling for the Leafs to offer him an extension and not let him hit free agency as the highest-priced goalie on the market. If he struggles, those same fans might suggest GM Kyle Dubas let him walk.

It appears from a recent report by TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, one of these two things may play out and at the end of the season, the decision may become rather obvious.

LeBrun said during a recent edition of TSN Insider Trading, “It is my understanding that the two sides have not talked about his contract since July, so it’s been quite a while and crickets since then.” The good news for Leafs fans, says LeBrun is that both sides are comfortable with that.

LeBrun adds:

“Of note, Freddie Andersen’s agent, it’s Claude Lemieux and his track record, normally, is not to negotiate during the season for a client of his that’s a pending UFA. He thinks it’s a distraction.”

LeBrun did hint that Lemieux might waive his own rule to work with Toronto if the Maple Leafs came to his client during the season with a very attractive offer but for now, both sides seem fine with the idea that Andersen starts the year without an extension and plays out his contract.

The Leafs and Andersen Waiting Isn’t a Huge Shock

The way this past offseason played out and with uncertainty around Andersen’s long-term status with the Maple Leafs, there really shouldn’t much a big surprise here that both sides are just going to wait this out and let things fall where they fall.

When this is all said and done, Andersen is either going to get handsomely rewarded for a job well done. Or, the Leafs will know they need to move in another direction.
