#3: HOW TO BABYSIT A GRANDMA
by Jean Reagan. Illustrated by Lee Wildish [published by Knopf]
This book has been on the New York Times Best Sellers’ Lift for 13 weeks. The tag line on this book is: How to organize a sleepover with your elderly charge.
The Book and Story
This book is one that parents of older children engaged in pre-reading activities – for example, recognizing that words exist and learning to spot these specific words – can both be read to and fill in the words by themselves.
The story is told from the ironic point of view of a child, who shows up at Gramma’s door announced as a babysitter and planning all the things needed to do to “take care of” Gramma. For example, one babysitting suggestion for grandma includes a sleepover at her house. And, the book is filled with useful babysitting tips to help children keep grandma busy at the park, when being tucked in for the night, and other times when Gramma gets needy.
