#2: I LOVE MOM WITH THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR

by Eric Carle [published by Grosset & Dunlap]

This book has been on the New York Times Best Sellers’ Lift for 6 weeks. The tag line on this children’s book is: That ravenous insect is brimming with motherly love.

The Book and Story

This short and beautifully illustrated book is what I call a “sit-on-the-lap” book. It is a picture book, with mother and baby animals on each page. It is short enough to become a repeatable favorite for young children. Even before children know what reading is, I can see them sitting on a parent’s lap pointing to animals and learning to say the animals’ names.

The focus on motherly love is heart-warming. Some of the book’s pages say, “I love you, Mum!” Some lines include “You lift me up.” “And hold me close,” “even when I’m snappy” “that’s why I love you, Mum!” The book is a way children can hear all the ways their mum loves them, as well as learning to express love to one’s mum. The book has Eric Carle’s beautiful artwork of animal mothers and babies, including giraffes, bears, penguins, and – of course – a Hungry Caterpillar found on each page. This is a classic.
