by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. Illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld

This book has been on the New York Times Best Sellers’ List for 35 weeks. The tag line on this book is: A bounty of good wishes.

The Book and Story

The content of this book is a list of blessings parents might express as they hope and dream about their children’s futures. Each poetic stanza is build around the concept of “more.” The result is a series of upbeat, rhythmatic wordplays that express hope for a future. The art shows multi-ethnic, smiling, engaged children. And the pictures and the rhymes work well together.

For example, one wish is “I wish you more will than hill,” and the art shows a boy sweating under the work of carrying a to-be-planted tree uphill. Or, “I wish you more umbrella than rain,” and the art shows a child dry in the rain. Or, “I wish you more can than knot,” and the art shows a girl’s dog watching her try to tie her shoes. At the end, the authors write: “I wish all of this for you, because you are everything I could wish for… and more.” By itself, what great reassurance for children.

Reading to children is a great way to build good relationships between you and your child, and many of life’s great lessons can be taught during the reading. Just sayin’
