Swayman Snaps, Sabres Blow Out Bruins for 3-1 Series Lead

Swayman snapped as the Buffalo Sabres embarrassed the Boston Bruins on Sunday and have taken a 3-1 series lead in their best of seven.

The Buffalo Sabres have made it emphatically clear they’re back in the playoffs to make noise. On Sunday, the Sabres 6-1 win over the Boston Bruins not only handed Boston one of their worst playoff losses of all time, but it also has pushed the Bruins to the brink of elimination. The Sabres are now one win away from their first playoff series win since 2007.

Buffalo kept their foot on the gas from early on in the first period as Peyton Krebs opened the scoring just over four minutes into the period. Josh Doan, Zach Benson, and Bowen Byram would add to the lead as the Sabres would be up 4-0 after the opening 20 minutes to stun the TD Garden crowd.

Buffalo would also outshoot Boston 19-5 in the period. Beck Malenstyn and Alex Tuch would stretch the lead to 6-0 in the third before Sean Kuraly would get one back to break the Alex Lyon shutout.

Game 4 might have been as loose as the Sabres have looked all season, and for Lyon, he becomes the first Buffalo goaltender to earn wins in each of his first two career playoff starts with the organization since Ryan Miller in 2006.

“Waste of Opportunity”

For the Boston Bruins, their actions and words showed exactly how they feel about their current situation: one loss away from their season ending. Bruins head coach Marco Sturm didn’t mince his words on how he felt about his team’s effort postgame.

“We should be embarrassed because it was embarrassing,” Sturm said. “Guys know me, and we’re going to talk about it. We’re going to analyze this, but at the end of the day, we have to move on, too. I am embarrassed, and we all should be.”

After being pulled in the third, Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman expressed his frustration with the team’s effort. When the coach was asked about Swayman’s reaction and if that was OK: “Absolutely [like to see that fire]. At least from one guy, right?” Sturm said. “It was not his fault today. I felt bad for him. That’s why we kept him in there for a while. Because he’s a battler. He wants to be in it.”

Charlie McAvoy said after the game, “Man to man in here, if we’re not f—ing embarrassed by what just happened, then I don’t know what to say. We have everything to play for from here, and we know we’re such a better team than what we just did.”

“Wasted opportunity. Unacceptable,” said David Pastrnak. “We expect better from ourselves. We are better than that, and we can’t show up like this.”

Game 5 goes down back in Buffalo on Tuesday at 7:30 PM ET.
