NHL Trade Talk Recap: Maple Leafs, Oilers, Sabres & Bruins

Leafs weigh goalie trade options, Oilers on brink after OT controversy, and Sabres dominate Bruins to move one win from history.

In this edition of NHL Trade Talk Recap, we look at the Toronto Maple Leafs’ goalie situation — who is tradable and why? The Maple Leafs won’t swap goalies for the sake of it, but they could use any deal to fix the blue line.

In the next two quick recaps, the Oilers are teetering after a controversial OT loss to Anaheim and now trail the series 3–1. That call stings, but the bigger issue is fatigue and defensive lapses. The Oilers keep scoring first, but can’t close games. Finally, Buffalo just pummeled Boston 6–1 to go up 3–1 in their series. The Sabres smell history, the Bruins look shell‑shocked, and Game 5 in Buffalo is huge.

If the Maple Leafs Want to Trade a Goalie, Who Would It Be?

Anthony Stolarz is the clear trade candidate. When he’s right, he’s brilliant, but his body won’t handle a full season, so flip him for real value (not a goalie-for-goalie swap). Joseph Woll is steady and improving; only move Woll if you can get a tangible upgrade in return.

Keep Dennis Hildeby as your reliable backup and let Artur Akhtyamov continue developing with the Toronto Marlies. Bottom line: don’t trade goalies just to be busy — use any move to actually strengthen the blue line, because fixing the defence will make whoever’s in net look a lot better.

Oilers on the Brink — One Loss from the End

After that overtime loss to the Ducks, the Oilers are down 3-1 and one defeat from elimination. That controversial OT goal will be discussed. But, for the Oilers, it felt like a punch in the gut, with fans and players stunned. But waving away the series because of one call would be lazy thinking.

The bigger picture is uglier: this group looks beat up. Years of deep runs have added mileage, and the speed and sharpness aren’t what they were. Edmonton keeps scoring first, yet can’t hold leads — sloppy defensive moments, lost puck battles, and late-game breakdowns keep handing momentum back to Anaheim.

Sabres Smash Bruins — Buffalo’s One Win From History

Buffalo showed up hungry and absolutely ran over Boston 6-1. Just one more win and they’ve got their first playoff series since ’07. Peyton Krebs got the party started, Josh Doan, Zach Benson and Bowen Byram piled on to make it 4-0 after the first, and Alex Lyon kept things locked enough to notch a couple of historic wins to open his playoff career. The last goalie to do that for Buffalo was Ryan Miller in ’06.

Boston looked awful. Marco Sturm didn’t pretend differently, and guys like Charlie McAvoy and David Pastrnak were upset. Jeremy Swayman battled but got pulled, and the room’s feeling heavy right now. Game 5 in Buffalo is huge. The Bruins need a full reset, while the Sabres will be chomping at the bit to finish this thing at home.
