Senators Running Out of Time With Alex Formenton Trade

Alex Formenton needs to sign by Thursday, Dec 1, 2022 to be eligible to play with the Ottawa Senators or in the NHL this season.

Alex Formenton remains the only unsigned RFA in the NHL this season. If he isn’t signed by the 5 PM deadline today, he is ineligible to play for the remainder of the season and post-season. As such, there are a number of eyes on the Ottawa Senators organization, wondering what they are going to do about the player.

It’s important to remember that much of the reason he’s unsigned has nothing to do with hockey. When a player chooses not to sign their qualifying offer — as was the case with Formenton over the summer — it’s typically because he feels he’s worth more and wants time to negotiate. In this case, there is uncertainty about the player’s future in the NHL. Formenton, now 23, is facing discipline for potential involvement in the Team Canada 2018 World Junior Championship team’s sexual assault case and is one of the few players from that World Junior team who did not respond to the allegations from media members. His silence is believed to suggest he’s somehow involved and the investigation being nearly complete means news about what’s coming next is imminent.

Alex Formenton needs to sign by Thursday, Dec 1, 2022 to be eligible to play in the NHL this season.

Formenton can play and there is some thought there might be a couple of NHL teams willing to take a chance on him despite the potential backlash that could come if it is determined he was guilty of the allegations. Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff lists the Vegas Golden Knights and Carolina Hurricanes as two teams that might show interest.

Either way, that deal needs to get done today and there aren’t any signs something is close. Elliotte Friedman noted in his 32 Thoughts article, “…there was some belief he’d be traded and resume his NHL career in another city. We will see what happens in the next 24 hours, but that belief has dissipated.”
