Seattle Kraken Sign Andre Burakovsky to Five-Year Contract

Andre Burakovsky has signed a five-year deal with the Seattle Kraken. He’ll have an opportunity to play in their top six.

The Colorado Avalanche didn’t have room to keep Andre Burakovsky around so he winds up in Seattle where he’ll play up higher in the lineup with the Kraken than he did the defending Stanley Cup Champions. Burakovksy had 61 points in in 80 games for the Avalanche last season. He added three goals and five assists in the 2021-22 NHL playoffs.

Burakovsky was always the likeliest candidate to leave the Avalanche in the summer, especially when Colorado mentioned that their priority would be to get deals done with Valeri Nichushkin and Artturi Lehkonen. He was going to get a raise based on the season he had and it was clear he’d had to go elsewhere to get his money. Coming off a season where he was paid $4.9 million per season on a two-year deal, he departs, as did Darcy Kuemper in free agency.

The deal is for five seasons and will cost the Seattle Kraken $5.5 million per season. Burakovsky is an efficient sniper whose production in third-line minutes with the Avs has been consistently impressive. If he’s slotted into the top six and his production goes up as a result, this could be an extremely valued deal for the Kraken. He is the kind of player the Kraken need as they aren’t extremely deep on offense.

Burakovsky finishes his stint with the Avalanche with 191 games played (94th in franchise history), 61 goals (45th), 89 assists (52nd), for 150 points. In the last three seasons, he’s been a fairly consistent, close to 20-goal guy
