Detroit Red Wings Sign David Perron to 2-Year Deal

The Detroit Red Wings have signed David Perron to a two-year deal in free agency. The Red Wings were busy signing players.

After the St. Louis Blues let David Perron go to free agency, the veteran winger who is deadly from the hash marks down has signed a two-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings. Perron will make $4.75 million per season over the next two seasons.

Detroit was one of the busier teams on Wednesday, signing forwards Andrew Copp and Dominik Kubalik, also defenseman Ben Chiarot to separate deals in the first few hours of free agency.

The Blues didn’t necessarily want to let Perron go, but they didn’t have the cap space to retain the player considering the money that had to go to Vladimir Tarasenko, the contract that was dished out to Robert Thomas and the upcoming deal that will have to go to Jordan Kyrou. It was a numbers thing for Perron and he wasn’t a fan of the fact the Blues gave him what he believed was a lowball offer.

At the time that it looked like Perron would test the market, GM Doug Armstrong said, “I never say never, but it’s a money situation that we’d have to work on. Everyone knows how I feel about David. Regardless of what happens, he’s always going to be known as a great Blue. It’s just what we have to do with some of our internal players.” Ultimately, the two sides couldn’t get a deal done and Perron goes to the Red Wings.

Perron is coming off a season where he posted 57 points in 67 games. He’s been a regular 20-plus goal scorer.
