Red Wings Have Further Plans to Add to the NHL Roster

Steve Yzmerman has said that he’s still looking at what options are out there for the Detroit Red Wings to add to their roster.

After having added a number of shorter-term deals to the Red Wings roster, the Detroit News’ Ted Kulfan writes and Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports that Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman has expressed that he may not be done making deals. With more than $9.5 million in cap space and a current projection of 22 players on the roster, it’s logical to assume both scribes are correct.

So far, the organization has brought in a starting goalie in Thomas Greiss, defensemen in Troy Stecher and Jon Merrill, plus veteran forwards in Vladislav Namestnikov, Bobby Ryan, and Sam Gagner. They weaponized some of the excess cap space by adding blueliner in Marc Staal. Many of these deals are players who might be moved before the NHL Trade Deadline in 2021. What else might Yzerman do?

Even with all the additions, there are still holes in the lineup. Some of these holes will be filled by prospects and others might be filled by one or two more free agency veterans.

Yzerman said of his plans:

There are a lot of players still on the free agent market. We have a lot of bodies right now. I do think there’s room potentially to add, and I would consider it as we go along, or when we get closer to knowing when we’re going to start. As far as the trade market… it’s pretty quiet around the league. Certainly we’d be open to listening.

Yzerman Will Proceed With Caution

The GM noted that when he looks around the NHL he sees that everyone is being extremely cautious. He’ll continue to do so. He said, “there’s just so much uncertainty. So be careful in the length of the term of the contract.”

He added, “We’re just going to continue to do what we are doing and we’ll look for ways to improve the team.”
