Jake DeBrusk’s Next Contract Coming Into View with Bruins

What Jake DeBrusk might get on a new deal with the Boston Bruins is becoming clearer thanks to other RFA deals.

What type of deal Jake DeBrusk might get with the Boston Bruins has been a hot-button topic since the middle of last season. Reportedly not necessarily keen to take a team-friendly discount, there was talk the Bruins might even consider trading DeBrusk around the NHL draft and heading into the offseason. That didn’t happen and as restricted free agent contracts start to get signed between other players and their respective teams, DeBrusk’s potential deal with the Bruins might be shaping itself up.

Joe Haggerty’s Boston Hockey Now is predicting that DeBrusk’s next contract will be very similar to the deal forward Ryan Strome just signed with the New York Rangers. Haggerty is suggesting Strome is a good comparable, also noting that it would be wise to look at Jake Virtanen’s deal in Vancouver and Denis Gurianov’s deal in Dallas as the low end of what DeBrusk will earn.

This would put DeBrusk around the $4 million AAV mark. Speculation is that the Bruins will look at a two-year bridge deal and that’s not all bad for DeBrusk who will have a chance to up his numbers and approach his next contract negotiation with bargaining power with arbitration rights.

Not Exactly What DeBrusk Was Hoping For

Talk heading into the offseason was that DeBrusk might be looking for around $5 million or more on a new deal. This new projection comes in about $1 million shy of that mark. So, while it’s not what DeBrusk might have hoped for, it is in line with the market seems to be offering.

A number of good players are being forced to reexamine their approach to free agency this offseason, DeBrusk among them. That said, it’s good to know he should be looking at around $4 – $4.5 million on a bridge deal with the chance to get a better deal when NHL-related revenues have hopefully gone up a bit.
