The new deal buys two UFA years and carries Mantha through his prime to age of 30. This is strong signing by GM Steve Yzerman after a summer where he added primarily all short-term deals.

Mantha, 26, completed his fourth full NHL season in 2019-20. Despite a shortened season due to both the pandemic and an injury (43 games out of 71), he was still among the Red Wings leaders with 16 goals (3rd), 22 assists (T3rd) and 38 points (3rd).

Mantha was originally drafted by the Red Wings in the first round (20th overall) of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

The deal breaks down as:

  • Year 1: $4.5M
  • Year 2: $5.3M
  • Year 3: $6.5M
  • Year 4: $6.5M
