Red Wings Finally Name a New GM, But There’s a Catch

The Detroit Red Wings have named Shawn Horcoff the interm GM, but there’s a catch in their announcement about the decision.

The Detroit Red Wings have named Shawn Horcoff their interim general manager, the team announced Tuesday. As per the team’s announcement, Horcoff will manage day-to-day roster decisions, salary cap, and hockey operations personnel for the Red Wings – reporting to Red Wings Governor and CEO Chris Ilitch during this interim period.”

That catch? This is a temporary position, although Horcoff could be named to the role full-time. He will be among the candidates up for the job as the search continues.

“As our process continues to find the best possible leader for Red Wings hockey operations, I’m appreciative of Shawn for stepping up to serve in this capacity,” said Ilitch. “His knowledge of our organization and range of experience allows us to operate with a clear decision-maker in place for the season ahead, while maintaining our commitment to carry out a thorough, methodical search process on our own timeline. Shawn has my complete support, and the authority to make decisions in the best interests of our organization.”

Does that include trades or contract signings? That much isn’t entirely clear. “Moving forward, he will oversee our hockey operations with full authority and our complete confidence, consistent with how we’ve empowered every leader in this role. He’s already deeply engaged in the important work ahead as camp begins, having been part of every conversation over the past months. He continues forward with full knowledge of our direction and the decisions already in motion—and remains a candidate for the permanent role.”

Max Bultman of The Athletic believes that an Edvisson signing is within the realm of duties Horcoff can undertake. The Red Wings could get that piece of business done on Tuesday.

At no point did the organization state that Horcoff would be allowed to trade someone like Dylan Larkin, or sign a player like Simon Edvinsson. The latter is a bit more time-sensitive, assuming the Red Wings want to get the player inked to an eight-year extension.

Fans Aren’t Thrilled With This Announcement

While the fan base doesn’t seem to have an issue with Horcoff personally, many of the comments were about how disappointed they are that this took two months to officially announce. The team still hasn’t found the right fit and just days before camp, the Red Wings are finally making a statement?

“We’re grateful for our players, staff, and fans for their support as we work toward this pivotal hire,” said Ilitch.
