His skating also makes him an ideal fit for the Oilers’ transition game. According to NHL EDGE, Scheifele reached a top skating speed of 23.44 mph, ranking in the 94th percentile, while averaging 4.43 miles skated per game, placing him in the 99th percentile league-wide. Those numbers show he has more than enough speed to keep up with McDavid and Edmonton’s high-tempo attack despite being in his early 30s.

Under normal circumstances, Winnipeg has little reason to trade one of the faces of its franchise.

However, if the Jets unexpectedly find themselves among the NHL’s bottom-five teams by the trade deadline, management could begin looking toward the future. Scheifele would instantly become one of the most sought-after players on the market because he isn’t a rental—he remains under contract for several more seasons, significantly increasing his trade value.

While this blockbuster would depend entirely on Winnipeg falling out of the playoff race, it’s the type of bold deadline swing that could benefit both organizations. Edmonton adds an elite offensive weapon for multiple playoff runs, while the Jets receive a package of young talent and future assets to accelerate a potential retool.

While no two blockbuster trades are identical, the proposed return falls more in line with veteran deals involving players like Bo Horvat, Claude Giroux and Vladimir Tarasenko.
