Oilers Trade Package for Ivan Miroshnichenko — Would You Accept?

With Miroshnichenko exploring a trade from Washington, the Oilers have a golden opportunity to add a young power forward with top-six upside.

With his path to regular NHL minutes blocked in Washington, Ivan Miroshnichenko has reportedly been given permission to speak with other teams in an effort to facilitate a trade. The young winger and his representatives have been working with the Capitals to explore options, but Washington isn’t about to give away a player they selected 20th overall in the 2022 NHL Draft.

If Miroshnichenko becomes available, the Edmonton Oilers should be among the teams making a call.

Edmonton’s Fit

The Oilers are off to a strong start, but too much of their success continues to come from the same core group of players. Mike Babcock has leaned heavily on his top contributors because Edmonton’s bottom-six forwards haven’t provided enough offense or consistency.

One player who has struggled to find a larger role is Isaac Howard, who has spent most of his time in the bottom six. Meanwhile, Vasily Podkolzin has flourished after earning a bigger opportunity. Babcock has consistently shown a preference for bigger, physical players who can skate, win battles, and play a north-south game. Miroshnichenko checks every one of those boxes.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound right-shot left winger would arrive in Edmonton with a familiar face already in the room. Podkolzin could help ease the transition, and the Oilers would be adding a player whose skill set fits exactly what Babcock looks for.

According to Dobber Prospects, Miroshnichenko’s strengths include:

  • Elite shot and scoring touch
  • Explosive north-south skating
  • Physicality and strong board play

Those are traits Edmonton desperately needs more of outside its core stars.

Miroshnichenko could eventually grow into a second-line role alongside Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Zach Hyman, adding speed, size, and an NHL-caliber release to the lineup.

Washington Trade

The Capitals have already granted Miroshnichenko permission to seek a trade, and the Oilers should be paying close attention. Washington’s biggest organizational strength is forward depth, so a one-for-one swap involving another forward doesn’t make much sense. That’s why a trade centered around Isaac Howard likely isn’t appealing for either side.

Instead, the Capitals may prefer draft capital and prospects. Edmonton must also be cautious about moving a defenseman. With Mattias Ekholm injured and several young blueliners still establishing themselves, the Oilers may not be eager to subtract from their backend.

Because of that, this feels more likely to be a futures-based deal than a hockey trade.

The Offer

Who Says No?

From Washington’s perspective, Quinn Hutson is an intriguing addition. The skilled forward has produced at the AHL level but has yet to receive a meaningful NHL opportunity. Joining the same organization as his brother, Cole Hutson, could make the fit even more appealing.

The second-round pick also gives the Capitals another valuable asset as they continue balancing the present with the future. The question is whether that’s enough.

While Washington has allowed Miroshnichenko to explore trade options, the organization has made it clear it still values the young winger. Given his age, draft pedigree, and untapped offensive upside, the Capitals may be looking for a first-round pick or a higher-end prospect in return.

Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery recently called Miroshnichenko “fantastic,” praising his work ethic, professionalism, and attitude despite his limited opportunities. Carbery also noted that Washington’s forward depth, not Miroshnichenko’s performance, has been the biggest obstacle to earning a regular spot in the lineup. That’s exactly why the Capitals won’t be eager to move him without receiving significant value in return.

For Edmonton, however, the appeal is obvious. The Oilers would be adding a young winger with size, speed, and top-six potential without sacrificing a roster player. It’s the type of calculated gamble that could pay off in a big way, much like the organization’s bet on Vasily Podkolzin.

Why It Works For Both Teams

The Oilers need younger talent around an aging core, and Miroshnichenko has all the tools to become a breakout player. His combination of size, skating ability, and finishing talent gives Edmonton something it currently lacks outside its top forwards.

For Washington, the move allows the organization to honor the player’s trade request while still adding meaningful value in return. Hutson is a legitimate prospect, and the second-round pick adds another asset to their pipeline.

If Miroshnichenko truly wants a fresh start, Edmonton could be one of the most logical landing spots. The Oilers get a high-upside winger who fits their identity, while the Capitals recoup assets for a player they haven’t been able to find a regular role for.

The fit makes sense for both sides, which is exactly why it’s a trade worth watching.
