Canadian Teams Daily Rumours: Canadiens, Canuck & Maple Leafs
Dobson inches closer, Näslund surfaces in Canucks talks, and Matthews/Nylander push Leafs management for grit and help up front.
This edition of Canadian Teams Daily Rumours includes three quick bites from around the league — a Habs injury update, a Canucks front‑office whisper, and a couple of Maple Leafs stars telling management what’s what.
Will these short items nudge action over the next few days (and the offseason) one way or another? We’ll see.
Canadiens Rumour: Dobson Skated, But Don’t Bank on Him Yet
Good news: Noah Dobson took his first skate since the upper‑body injury on Monday, skating by himself and looking a bit limited. But progress is progress. Dobson was a big summer pickup who logged 80 games, 12 goals, and 35 assists for Montreal. Just getting him near the ice is a welcome sight for a team tied 2-2 with Tampa and heading back to Florida for Game 5.
The reality check is that it’s unlikely he’s magically game‑ready this week. The Habs are probably going to have to navigate at least the next couple of games without him. That means relying on Hutson, Carrier, and Xhekaj to keep doing the heavy lifting. Dobson would be a legit boost when he’s back — more offence from the blue line and steady minutes — but don’t pencil him in until he’s actually cleared to play.
Canucks Rumour: Are the Canucks Eyeing Markus Näslund for a Front-Office Role?
Word is the Canucks are casting a wide net for their next GM and other front-office spots. Names are getting tossed around left and right — including former great Markus Näslund. CHEK’s Rick Dhaliwal floated the idea on Donnie and Dhali, saying he wouldn’t be surprised if ownership’s list included ex-players like Näslund or Roberto Luongo.
Look, it’s an easy sell to fans: bring back a franchise legend who knows the city and the culture. That said, front-office work ain’t the same as lighting the lamp. If Näslund’s on the list, it’d mean ownership’s at least considering a familiar face with credibility in the room. Whether he wants to or has the chops for the GM grind is a whole other question.
Maple Leafs Rumour: Matthews and Nylander Just Poked Management
Here’s a fun rumour. William Nylander and Auston Matthews didn’t just shrug and wait for moves — they went straight to the coach and management with a message. They believe in the core, but they want help. Specifically, they want “a couple of dogs up front” and two mobile defensemen. That’s refreshingly proactive for star players, and it tells you they want to win now, not just collect highlight reels.

This puts the Leafs in a neat spot heading into the offseason. They’ve reportedly got just north of $22 million to spend and no huge contracts coming off the books, so there’s real pressure to spend smart. If Matthews and Nylander are buying into the plan — and offering input — the front office can target gritty forwards and puck-moving D-men who actually fit the team’s needs instead of chasing splashy names for the sake of it. It’s a clear signal: fix the muck in front of the net and give the stars cleaner ice, and the Leafs’ blue-chip scorers can do what they do best.
The Daily Wrap
Dobson’s first skate is encouraging, but don’t expect a miracle return this week. Montréal still needs to lean on the players who’ve been stepping up. Näslund’s name popping in Vancouver talk is the kind of feel‑good option owners like. However, front‑office chops matter more than jersey nostalgia.
And Matthews/Nylander poking management is actually a good sign. The stars want help, and they’ve pointed to exactly the types of players the Maple Leafs need: gritty forwards and mobile defensemen. If the Maple Leafs actually spend that $22M smartly and plug a couple of holes, all three stories point to one theme — concrete, sensible fixes beat headline grabs every time.
