NHL Trade Talk Recap: Maple Leafs, Canucks, Canadiens & Oilers
A Rielly-Pettersson trade, Demidov contract urgency, and growing Mike Babcock fallout highlight today’s NHL recap.
This edition (June 10, 2026) of NHL Trade Talk Recap includes three big stories — a potential Rielly-for-Pettersson blockbuster, contract hot takes, and coaching headaches. Do the Maple Leafs and Canucks actually make that swap work? Are the Canadiens racing to lock up Ivan Demidov before rule changes cut term length? And the Oilers are wrestling with the fallout of reportedly courting Mike Babcock while the NHLPA pushes for an investigation.

Rielly Homecoming? A Swap That Actually Makes Sense
A deal sending Morgan Rielly and Nick Robertson to Vancouver for Elias Pettersson sounds huge. But it’s the kind of shakeup that helps both teams. Toronto gets a legitimate top-six center in Pettersson, giving the club another elite option behind Auston Matthews, while Vancouver gains a hometown veteran blueliner who can steady a young defence and a gritty winger who could flourish with a fresh start.
Rielly waiving his no-move clause might not be as far-fetched as it sounds. He already has a home and family roots in Vancouver. He could take on a meaningful role on a blueline that needs leadership, and the chance to be a mentor makes it plausible. For the Maple Leafs, the trade is a fast track to an upgraded top six. For the Canucks, it’s about fit, consistency and adding pieces that play hard every night.
What If the Maple Leafs and Canucks Dared to Think Really Big?
Demidov Clock’s Ticking — Sign Him Now
Montreal and Ivan Demidov both seem keen to make this a long-term thing. But with the NHL likely scrapping eight-year deals after September, there’s suddenly a real rush to get terms done. The Habs want to lock in a cornerstone for as long as possible. Demidov wants to stay, so beating the rule change feels like a win-win.
That pressure changes the negotiation dynamic compared to the Hutson example. Now there’s less time to drag things out, and more incentive for both sides to agree quickly. If they can wrap something up around July 1, Montreal keeps cap flexibility to build around its young core while giving Demidov the stability he wants.

Babcock Drama Puts Oilers in a Tight Spot
Looks like Edmonton’s interest in Mike Babcock just kicked up a whole lot of baggage. The NHLPA wants a formal investigation into past allegations, and the league may need to review the situation before any hiring moves forward. That means hiring him now could create uncertainty for the organization if new information emerges or the league becomes involved.
So why rush? If I were the Oilers, I’d sit back for a couple of weeks, see if options like Bruce Cassidy or John Tortorella pop up, and avoid bringing extra drama into a team that already has plenty to sort out.
