Kane Could Still Be a Jets PTO Option

Evander Kane isn’t the same player as his peak days, but he’s not totally done either. His season with the Vancouver Canucks felt a bit underwhelming compared to expectations. The next logical step could be a professional tryout (PTO). It’s the kind of move teams make when they think there’s still something there, but they don’t want to commit long-term.

What makes the Jets link interesting is that Kane still brings size, some grit, and enough skill to matter if he’s used right. He’s older (turning 35 soon), his stats weren’t flashy, but he still contributed in real ways like shots and meaningful minutes. If Winnipeg is looking for depth, veteran edge, and secondary scoring—and Kane’s willing to accept a smaller role—then a PTO could be a pretty low-risk, maybe-high-reward gamble.

“Happy Captain” Quote, But No Real Matthews Answers on the Future

John Chayka went on record this summer saying what he saw was a “happy captain.” Plus that Auston Matthews has pride in being the Maple Leafs captain and wants to win in Toronto. That probably helped calm a lot of fans down. But if you read between the lines, Chayka didn’t say anything concrete about an extension, timeline, or how long Matthews is planning to stay fully committed.

And that’s the thing—nobody’s really answered the big question yet. Matthews himself basically said he can’t predict the future, and even after all the Leafs roster changes, there’s still no clear signal on how convinced he is. The real test isn’t even this season. It’s next summer, when there’s only one year left and the pressure (and the story) gets way louder.

Nurse’s Big Deal: Why It Happened, and What Changed

Earlier in the offseason, Edmonton moved Darnell Nurse, even though he was still locked in for four more years at $9.25 million AAV. So it’s fair to look back at how that deal happened in the first place, because a lot of things had to line up for Edmonton to pull the trigger.

The short version is that management (Ken Holland) gave Nurse a long-term extension after his 2020-21 breakout. That breakout was powered by a hot shooting percentage that didn’t really last. On top of that, big defenseman deals around the league basically set the market. And Edmonton was also dealing with Oscar Klefbom’s injury situation. That added pressure to find a true top-left No. 1 D. If Klefbom stayed healthy, Nurse likely plays a more “normal” role. Edmonton has more breathing room, which probably means a smaller cap hit.
