NHL Trade Talk Recap: Flyers, Maple Leafs, Canadiens & Offer Sheet Mania
lyers shake up the NHL with a record offer sheet, Leafs weigh Patrick Kane’s fit, and Canadiens make a savvy long-term bet on Dobes.
In today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap (July 3, 2026), the NHL was rocked by a huge contract offer sheet. The Flyers just dropped a massive offer sheet for Leo Carlsson, leaving the Ducks sweating and other teams watching closely. The Maple Leafs are debating whether Patrick Kane fits as a “top six” piece or more of a “top nine” boost. And the Canadiens made a smart move by locking in Jakub Dobes so the goalie market can’t steamroll his price later.

Flyers Shock NHL With Huge Carlsson Offer Sheet
Leo Carlsson just signed an offer sheet from the Flyers worth $18 million a year for five years. It’s a huge number, and the NHL is already reacting because it could set off a domino effect. What makes it extra interesting is the structure. The contract includes numerous signing bonuses and large annual bonus payouts. Anaheim now has seven days to match, and if they don’t, they get four first-round picks in return.
The bigger question is whether this is just the start. There are even hints that other offer sheets may have been filed today, which would force teams to rethink what they’re offering RFAs. Anaheim apparently thought Carlsson and Cutter Gauthier would land closer to $10–12 million, so this changes the whole pricing conversation for young stars. Around the league, executives are already talking about how much more expensive the next extension targets (like Bedard and Celebrini) could get.

Leafs Are Thinking “Top Six” or “Top Nine” With Kane
The Maple Leafs are basically trying to sort out one big question. Do they build like a true top-six team, or more like a top-nine team where goals come from a wider group? And people are already wondering where Patrick Kane fits in. One idea is that Kane could be a power-play help, smart late-game touches, and the kind of playmaking that changes games. But the other side is roster construction. Toronto’s trying to keep depth scoring real, not just rely on the top guys.
The Maple Leafs’ plan is to build a more consistent offence throughout the lineup while staying gritty enough to be tough to play against. The only real question is whether they see Kane’s impact as “top six” or “top nine.”

Canadiens Lock In Dobes With a Smart Bet
The Canadiens are keeping the contract train rolling. After Ivan Demidov’s extension news, Montreal also signed Jakub Dobes to a three-year deal worth $5.4 million per year—starting in 2027-28. The big reason this matters is the timing: Montreal effectively “pre-bought” parts of Dobes’ future prime years before he could really have leverage as a restricted free agent next summer.
It’s a bet with upside, but it’s not a lock. Dobes is still relatively unproven as a full-time NHL starter. That means the Canadiens are paying for cost certainty in a market where goalie prices are climbing fast. If he turns into an elite guy, Montreal can pay later when the cap’s even higher, and they’re already set with their core. If it doesn’t fully work out, they’re still sitting on a decent Plan B.
Dobes himself seems to view it as less pressure and more focus. He also mentioned that getting it done this summer lets him spend the next few years just improving and playing his best.
