Bedard Injury Scare Raises Questions as Blackhawks Await Clarity

Connor Bedard left an offseason skate after an awkward fall, sparking injury concerns. The Blackhawks await updates on his status.

Offseason skating has barely begun, and it already looks like there might be bad news for the Chicago Blackhawks. Connor Bedard left an informal practice session in Vancouver on Thursday after an awkward fall, appearing to injure his left shoulder. Video of the incident, first reported by Blackhawks blogger Ryan McGregor, (video by @BlackhawksFocus) shows Bedard skating off the ice while clearly in pain, holding his arm close to his body.

The fall drew immediate attention, given Bedard’s recent injury history — but importantly, it’s the opposite shoulder from the one he hurt last December, when he dislocated his right shoulder on a faceoff against St. Louis and missed roughly a month of action. McGregor noted the way Bedard skated off Thursday closely resembled that earlier incident, though he stressed the severity is still unknown.

Dr. Harjas Grewal, reacting to the video, noted that it appears to be some kind of left shoulder issue, but since it’s not the same shoulder as December, it isn’t a re-injury, and there’s reason to hope it’s mild.

This was a private training session, not an official team practice or development camp, and Bedard was skating with a group of NHL players in his hometown as he does most offseasons. Because it’s summer, team-level medical updates aren’t expected quickly, though Bedard’s agent, Don Meehan, has said more clarity should come in the following days.

This Is Potentially Brutal News for the Blackhawks and Bedard

While any injury is never good timing, this is not ideal. Bedard remains unsigned as he and the Blackhawks work through a expected long-term contract extension, and general manager Kyle Davidson said as recently as this week that the two sides still had work to do.

With training camp still roughly two months away, there’s time for this to resolve without lingering effects — but any shoulder concern involving Bedard, given last season’s injury, is one Chicago will be watching closely.
