NHL Trade Talk Recap: Flames, Senators, Ducks & Acting Quickly

Flames lock up Nemec, Tkachuk’s Ottawa exit gets messier, and Anaheim battles offer-sheet pressure in today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap.

In today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap (July 6, 2026), we share how quickly three teams are moving this summer, but for very different reasons. The Flames locked in Simon Nemec on a big five-year deal after grabbing him from New Jersey. The Senators’ Brady Tkachuk situation is getting a deeper, more uncomfortable backstory, with new reporting focusing on the Wingmen podcast and growing dressing-room tension. And the Ducks are dealing with the chaos of the offer-sheet market by extending Pavel Mintyukov right after getting warned about a pending offer sheet—right alongside the Leo Carlsson $18M storyline.

Flames Lock Up Simon Nemec for 5 Years

Calgary just signed defenceman Simon Nemec to a five-year contract carrying a $7.25 million cap hit, locking him in as the new blue-line centrepiece—pretty soon after trading for him from the Devils.

Nemec was the Devils’ big prize in that late-June swap, coming over with Maxim Tsyplakov. Calgary gave up a mix of draft picks and prospect Etienne Morin. Nemec is still only 22. But after a career-high 26 points last season, the Flames are betting he becomes the long-term right-side anchor with Zayne Parekh—at a cap number they like.

Brady Tkachuk Trade Drama Gets More Messy

The trade has already happened, but new reporting paints an uncomfortable picture of what was going on in Ottawa before Brady Tkachuk left for Florida. According to Elliotte Friedman, the fallout goes back to after this year’s Winter Olympics, when players were worn down. Reports suggest the atmosphere in Ottawa became especially tense because Tkachuk was seen as checked out on the Senators. At the same time, he was also prioritizing Team USA and building his brand.

A big part of the mess, according to the reporting, was the Tkachuk brothers’ podcast, Wingmen, including comments that rubbed teammates the wrong way. Other reports add that Brady had allegedly told teammates for years that he didn’t plan to re-sign with Ottawa. That makes the eventual trade seem far less sudden than many people believed. It sounds like it was already in the works.

Ducks Extend Mintyukov Right After Offer-Sheet Warning

Anaheim just avoided a second offer-sheet headache. Frank Seravalli reports the Ducks were told an offer sheet was pending for defenceman Pavel Mintyukov. Just hours later, multiple reports, including confirmation from Mintyukov’s agent, Dan Milstein, confirmed that Anaheim had signed him to a five-year extension worth about $7.4M per year.

It lines up too well with the bigger problem they’re already dealing with: the $18M offer sheet for Leo Carlsson. Anaheim is trying to save cap space to match that one, so getting another offer-sheet threat would have been a nightmare. By locking Mintyukov in fast, they prevented another team from dictating the terms of his next contract.
