NHL Trade Talk Recap: Capitals, Maple Leafs & Oilers’ Best Player?

Did the Capitals’ Offseason Moves Convince Ovechkin to Return, and Also to Retire?

Alex Ovechkin originally planned to step away before this season even started. Washington’s offseason work changed his mind, and he said as much on TNT: once he saw the moves the Capitals made, it gave him and his family a reason to go for one more Cup run. So this wasn’t a player running out of gas. He was ready to leave until the front office gave him a reason to stay.

Elliotte Friedman offered another angle, though. The Capitals added Alex Tuch and Jordan Kyrou, and while nobody was going to disrespect Ovechkin, his influence on games was bound to shrink. The same moves that brought him back may have also shown him his role was changing. The Capitals didn’t push him out; it’s just the natural order of things. He gets one more shot with a contender and a chance to leave on his own terms, and he may end up playing in Russia next.

Ovechkin’s Retirement Decision Isn’t as Black and White as It Seems

Maple Leafs Fans Are Panicking After Four Games, and Howard Berger’s Satire Says It All

Howard Berger wrote a satirical piece imagining a Maple Leafs board meeting after a shaky 2-2 start, with everyone panicking. The owner worries about money, the coach worries about leadership, the GM defends the first overall pick, and Matthews jersey sales somehow become the most important stat in the room. It’s funny, but underneath the joke is a real point: a slow October and a scoreless stretch for McKenna shouldn’t turn into a crisis.

The author takes a bigger lesson from it. Toronto can change its roster much faster than it can change the story around the team, and old expectations hang around long after the players leave. They’ve been writing about turning the page on the Marner and Core Four era, while Berger seems more skeptical, especially about how much gets pinned on Matthews. Either way, nobody has to decide after four games whether McKenna, Hiller or this whole experiment is working. The better move is to just watch.

Bouchard Is Playing Like the Best Player in the NHL, and the Oilers Almost Traded Him

Evan Bouchard is off to an absurd start for Edmonton. He has six goals in four games, leading the league, and 11 points, second only to Connor McDavid’s 12. Only one other defenceman in NHL history has scored that many goals through his first four games of a season. Scott Wheeler of The Athletic called him the best player in the league so far, and the on-ice numbers back that up, with the Oilers outscoring teams 11-1 at five-on-five when he’s out there. Elliotte Friedman even relayed a text from someone who skipped the Norris debate and went straight to the Rocket Richard.

Mike Babcock says he didn’t realize Bouchard was this good, but he also thinks there’s more coming, especially if Bouchard tightens up defensively. Draisaitl laughed about how the league still underrates him. And here’s the part that makes the Oilers wince: they once talked about trading Bouchard to Carolina in a deal for Mikko Rantanen. They passed, Rantanen ended up in Dallas, and Edmonton is now very happy it never pulled that trigger.
