Minnesota Wild Sign Kaapo Kahkonen to 2-Yr Deal

Goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen to a two-year contract (two-way contract in 2020-21 and one-way contract in 2021-22)

As per an official tweet by the Minnesota Wild, the team has re-signed goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen to a two-year contract (two-way contract in 2020-21 and one-way contract in 2021-22).

The deal is worth $700,000/$250,000 in 2020-21 and the second year, his NHL contract is for $750,000.

This now gives the Wild a goaltending trio that includes Kahkonen as the third-string goaltender and puts newly acquired Cam Talbot in the starters spot with Alex Stalock taking the backup position. Stalock’s contract ends at the close of the 2021-22 season and it is believed he will compete with Kahkonen for a job as early as next season.

Kahkonen won the Baz Bastien Award as the AHL’s outstanding goaltender last season. He is 42-20-11 with a 2.45 GAA, a .916 SV% and 13 shutouts in 73 career AHL contests with Iowa.

The 24-year-old Kahkonen started five games for the Wild during his first NHL season and had an impressive run. He earned a record of 3-1-1, finished with a .913 save percentage and had a 2.96 goals against average.

The question now will be, is Kahkonen the goaltender of the future for the Wild? It appears he’s going to get the chance to show his stuff.
