Connor Ingram “Bullish” on Returning, But Oilers Looking at Other Options

Could goaltender Connor Ingram return to the Oilers on an extension, or will Edmonton go with another option they’ve got available?

The speculation is that the Edmonton Oilers and goaltender Connor Ingram won’t come to terms on an extension prior to July 1 and free agency, but don’t tell Ingram that. According to a report by Mark Spector of Sportsnet, Ingram isn’t giving up on the idea that he is likely to return to the Oilers next season.

Spector posted on X, “Sounds like G Connor Ingram is bullish on re-signing with EDM, though negotiations are ongoing. Babcock doesn’t affect his decision. Loved his time there – not swayed by new coach.” The journalist added, “Bowman with goalie irons in a few fires. A lot of options between the pipes in EDM right now.”

These comments are interesting for a few reasons.

First, it is believed there will be interest in Ingram if he hits the open market. The Ottawa Senators would be among them. The Florida Panthers might also be, given they have no goalies signed to speak of.

Second, Spector’s suggestion that there are several options for the Oilers in goal suggests that Bowman has found a couple of trades he likes. Either that, or he’s targeted a name or two in free agency and intends to make a push. That could include Frederik Andersen or Sergei Bobrovsky. The big swing, of course, is Connor Hellebuyck, but few see that as a realistic option.

Still, that Ingram wants to return and would potentially choose the Oilers over testing the market speaks volumes. He wants to be back and if the Oilers can come to a number or term that he thinks works, he’ll skip free agency and stick around.
