The Colorado Avalanche got one of their restricted free agent contracts done on Monday as they inked Ryan Graves to a new deal. Avalanche GM Joe Sakic told reporters, including Ryan S. Clark of The Athletic, the team and the player have agreed on a new three-year deal.
It’s a nice contract all around for a valued defenseman and helps stagger when the team’s contracts expire.
Reports are that the contract will carry an average annual value of $3.16 million and CapFriendly provides the full breakdown:
- 2020-21: $2.5MM
- 2021-22: $3.0MM
- 2022-23: $4.0MM
They also list the most comparable contracts as Sean Walker with the Los Angeles Kings who signed at $2.65 million for four years, Will Butcher who signed with the New Jersey Devlis and $3.73 million and three yearss, and Stephen Johns in Dallas who signed for $2.35M and three years.
Graves, 25, led the entire league in +/- during his first full season in the NHL, finishing at a +40 in 69 games. While not everyone values +/- the same way, that’s a hard number to ignore. He was valueable at both ends of the ice, while also posting a 26-point season, blocked 150 shots and registered 112 hits.
Graves spent four seasons in the AHL before making his NHL debut with the Avalanche in 2018-19.
