Eastern Contender Looking at Sign-And-Trade as Alex Tuch Confirmed To Be Leaving Sabres
The Buffalo Sabres are reportedly preparing to part ways with Alex Tuch, a potential sign-and-trade coming from an Eastern contender.
The Buffalo Sabres appear to be heading toward a significant roster change this offseason, with veteran forward Alex Tuch reportedly not expected to re-sign with the organization.
Sabres general manager Jarmo Kekalainen acknowledged that while Tuch “will be missed,” the team is prepared to move forward. Friedman added that Buffalo is exploring a sign-and-trade scenario, with multiple sources identifying the Washington Capitals as the current favorites to acquire the winger.
With an eight-year contract still available through a sign-and-trade, Buffalo now has an opportunity to maximize its return rather than risk losing one of its top players for nothing.
Contract Gap Appears Too Large to Overcome
The biggest issue between Tuch and the Sabres appears to be his next contract. Pierre LeBrun reported, “Sounds like the Sabres made a pretty solid offer this week to Tuch, one last try at it. But obviously didn’t get it done. So both sides moved on and we await to see if this sign-and-trade with Washington happen.”
The 30-year-old winger is believed to be seeking a deal comparable to the extension recently signed by Adrian Kempe. With Kempe’s new contract establishing a premium market for top-six forwards, Tuch’s camp is reportedly looking for similar long-term money.
While Buffalo certainly values Tuch’s contributions, the organization appears hesitant to meet that asking price. The Sabres have several young players who will require significant raises in the coming years, forcing management to carefully evaluate how much cap space can be committed to a veteran forward entering his thirties.
Rather than allowing negotiations to drag into unrestricted free agency, Buffalo now seems willing to pursue a sign-and-trade solution.
Capitals Continue Aggressive Push
Washington’s interest in Tuch makes plenty of sense.
The Capitals have remained aggressive in their pursuit of veteran talent as they attempt to extend their championship window with the uncertainty around Alex Ovechkin. LeBrun added, “I don’t expect any news on Alex Ovechkin before July 1 free agency. But should have word at some point after that.” Tuch would immediately provide Washington with another proven top-six forward capable of producing offensively while contributing defensively.
The Capitals appear to be pushing hard. They added Jordan Kyrou on Tuesday and they may not be done.

Tuch’s combination of size, speed, physicality, and penalty-killing ability makes him one of the more complete wingers available this summer. He has consistently produced offensively while taking on difficult matchups, something that would fit perfectly with Washington’s veteran-heavy roster.
The ability to offer an eight-year contract through a sign-and-trade could also give the Capitals an advantage over teams waiting to pursue him on the open market.
Tuch Leaves Lasting Impact on Buffalo
If this truly marks the end of Tuch’s tenure in Buffalo, he will leave behind an impressive legacy. Since arriving from the Vegas Golden Knights, Tuch quickly became one of the faces of the franchise. His leadership, consistency, and connection with the fan base made him a popular figure both on and off the ice.
However, the realities of the salary cap often force difficult decisions, and it appears Kekalainen is prepared to make one. While losing Tuch would undoubtedly hurt in the short term, Buffalo’s focus now shifts toward obtaining the best possible return and continuing to build a roster capable of ending its lengthy playoff drought.
As things stand today, all indications point toward Tuch wearing a new jersey next season, with the Capitals emerging as the team to watch.
