Marlies Sign Ryan Chyzowski and Antti Suomela to AHL Contracts [Report]

The Toronto Marlies signed two young players this week in Ryan Chyzowski and Antti Suomela. What are the particulars? Where are they from?

Although usually I try to cover the Toronto Maple Leafs each day, my sense is that I should try to keep up with the entire organization. One never knows when or where there might be movement between the parent club and its AHL affiliate.

So, in today’s post I will share two pieces of AHL Toronto Marlies’ news. In the first bit of news, Ryan Chyzowski signed a two-year AHL contract with the AHL Marlies. In the second bit of news, the Marlies announced that they had re-signed trade acquisition Antti Suomela to a single-season AHL contract.

Who Is Ryan Chyzowski?

Chyzowski, a 21-year-old left-winger, was the captain of the WHL’s Medicine Hat Tigers. Chyzowski’s draft year was in 2018, but he went undrafted. However, the Winnipeg Jets invited him to their rookie camp in 2019 before he returned to Medicine Hat. The Kamloops, BC, native has been a long-time Tigers player.

Chyzowski has been improving over the five seasons he’s played with the Tigers. During the 2019-20 season he scored 69 points in 62 games. Last season he scored 29 points in 23 games. Chyzowski’s contract is at the AHL level only; and, although the Marlies are the affiliate of the Maple Leafs the contracts are not interchangeable. If he were called to the NHL, he’d have to sign a new contract – probably a two-way contract – with the Maple Leafs.

Who Is Antti Suomela?

Suomela, a 27-year-old center, came to the Maple Leafs in mid-April in a trade for Alexander Barabanov. He was part of the retained salary portion of the Maple Leafs’ Nick Foligno trade. He played seven games with the Marlies last season and scored two assists.

Suomela was a depth player for San Jose and played in only four games with the Sharks this past season. He didn’t score at the NHL level. However, he did spend time with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda and scored a goal and five assists (for six points) in 10 games.

Antti Suomela, now with the Toronto Marlies

Given the contract, it looks as the Maple Leafs’ plans are to keep Suomela at the AHL level. In fact, the Marlies will retain him on an AHL-only deal because it won’t count towards the Maple Leafs’ limit of 50 roster spots for next season.

Marlies Say Good-bye to Kenny Agostino

In addition, veteran Marlies’ player Kenny Agostino has given up his NHL bid (for now) and has signed a two-year KHL contract with Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod. Agostino spent the past two seasons with the Marlies and played a single game for the Maple Leafs (he didn’t score in that game).

With the Marlies, he scored nine goals and 13 assists (for 22 points) in 22 games. During the 2019-20 season, he scored 27 goals and added 22 assists (for 49 points) in 53 games.

Good luck to him.
