Multiple reports confirm that forward Jason Spezza will be returning to the Toronto Maple Leafs next season. He signed a one-year deal for the third straight year at a league-minimum contract of $750,000. The team has confirmed the report and to nobody’s surprise, Spezza will be back with the only team he wants to play for as long as he’s a part of the NHL.

As Kristen Shilton of TSN writes, Spezza might be the one thing twitter can actually agree on. he was great for the Maple Leafs last season, acting both as an off-ice leader, but producing on the ice with 30 points in 54 regular saeason games. He added, five points in seven playoff games and was one of the few bright spots for Toronto in a seven-game series loss to the Montreal Canadiens.
Spezza has been very vocal about wanting to be back with the team and speculation was that, should he not have been offered another deal, he would have retired from the game.
Good Signing For Maple Leafs
While GM Kyle Dubas tries to figure out which of his many pending UFAs he wants to keep for next season, Spezza was a no-brainer. He performed well beyond his value last year and should do the same again in 2021-22, even if his production happens to drop.
Spezza said at the end of the season, “I feel like there’s a lot of unfinished business. They’re invested in the group here and I’m hopeful that I get another opportunity next year and (help) push this team over the top.”
