Major Pivot as Connor Hellebuyck Makes Trade Request Public

Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck has gone public with his trade request. Now what happens?

Connor Hellebuyck is still looking to be traded by the Winnipeg Jets, and his agent has just laid the gauntlet down. Ray Petkau, who represents Hellebuyck, released a statement confirming that the superstar netminder is looking to be moved. The player and the agent have now gone public with his trade request.

As per the official statement that Petkau released on behalf of his client:

“OFFICIAL STATEMENT

CONNOR HELLEBUYCK

“Winnipeg has been my home for my entire NHL career, and I will always be grateful for my time there. I have never forgotten June 23, 2012. That’s the day Winnipeg took a chance on a goalie playing in Odessa, TX. I gave everything I had from that moment to prove that the Jets made the right decision. Several months ago, I privately requested a trade. I have tried to handle the situation quietly and respectfully while giving the organization time to explore its options. With training camp approaching, I felt it was important to publicly confirm my request. My position has not changed, and I believe moving on is the best path forward for me and my family.”

He closed with, “I appreciate everything Winnipeg Jets fans have meant to me throughout my career and hope a resolution can be reached soon.”

The latest rumblings had the Buffalo Sabers interested, and a trade was nearly completed at the NHL Draft. Ultimately, it didn’t get done and the picks that would have come to Winnipeg were used during the selection process. Hellebuyck was said to have approved a trade to Buffalo if one could be completed.

If the Sabres are still interested, it’s hard to know what the package would look like.

It will be interesting to see what other teams step up and if the trade request going public changes the potential return.
