Kraken Select Flames’ Mark Giordano During Expansion Draft

The Seattle Kraken have reportedly selected defenseman Mark Giordano from the Calgary Flames during the NHL Expansion Draft.

It was widely expected Giordano would be Seattle’s choice from the Calgary Flames, but early on Wednesday, it was confirmed by multiple sources that Giordano was the guy. The Seattle Kraken have likely found their first captain. The team is expected to select Mark Giordano from the Calgary Flames, according to Samil Nadim Valji of TSN and confirmed by Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic.

Valiji writes:” I can confirm that the Seattle Kraken have chosen Calgary Flames captain Mark Giordano as their pick at the Expansion Draft, to be announced this evening.”

With the selection, it brings with it the end of an era in Calgary. Giordano is one of the best players to sever suit up for the Flames organization and was a staple on their blue line for years. As Jonathan Willis of The Athletic points out, “Seattle’s doing a nice job of hurting their divisional rivals. I’ve seen some Flames fans that seem pretty okay with Giordano moving on, but that feels like a massive loss to me. Still a great player at 37.”

He is correct in that Giordano was an older player, but still an effective one. He was eating lots of minutes for the Flames, was their on-ice and off-ice leader and there’s a good chance he plays for Seattle to finish out his final year at $6.75 million and either re-signs with the Kraken on a lower-cost deal or goes back to Calgary.
