John Carlson Signs a 2-Year Deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning
John Carlson signs a two-year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning, choosing not to stay with the Carolina Hurriacnes.
John Carlson is heading to Tampa. The veteran defenseman has signed a two-year contract with the Lightning worth $17 million total, an $8.5 million average annual value, according to Pierre LeBrun.
The move comes as a bit of a swerve. Carolina had traded for Carlson’s exclusive negotiating rights just days before free agency opened, sending a sixth-round pick and defenseman Kyle Masters to Anaheim for the chance to work out a deal ahead of the market. That window evidently didn’t produce an agreement, and once free agency opened, Carlson turned to Tampa Bay — long viewed as a frontrunner given his stated preference to stay in the Eastern Conference, close to his family.
Tampa Bay traded away right-shot defenseman Darren Raddysh to Toronto earlier in the offseason, leaving a hole on the right side that Carlson, also a right-hand shot, slots directly into. And, with news that Zach Werenski had decided he didn’t want a trade out of Columbus — where the Lightning were also heavily rumored to be a possible landing spot — there was no risk that Carlson would hinder a Werenski trade.
The Nick Paul trade earlier in the day to send the forward to the Toronto Maple Leafs also makes sense now, given the higher AAV that comes along with Carlson’s new deal.

Ultimately, Carlson made the most sense as a veteran top pair fit alongside Victor Hedman.
Carlson, 36, is coming off a season split between Washington and Anaheim after a surprise mid-season trade ended his 17-year run as a Capital. Across 71 total games, he posted 60 points (14 goals, 46 assists) — the second-highest scoring defenseman among this year’s free agents and the fifth-highest scoring player overall, while logging over 23 minutes a night.
For Tampa Bay, it’s a short-term, high-impact bet on a proven veteran to bolster the back end as the Lightning continue building around Hedman, Nikita Kucherov and Brayden Point.
