Oilers Sign Frederik Andersen: Now What’s with Tristan Jarry?
Oilers add Frederik Andersen on a one-year deal, but the bigger question is what it means for their crowded goalie situation.
The Edmonton Oilers signed Frederik Andersen to a one-year, $2.8 million deal. Nothing huge. But this is the kind of move you’d expect from a team adding depth. But the bigger picture suggests Edmonton’s goalie situation is still being sorted out.
What Does Andersen Bring to the Oilers?
Andersen is 36 and has 552 NHL games on his resume across Anaheim, Toronto, and Carolina. His numbers are strong—324 wins, a 2.59 GAA, .913 save percentage, and 28 shutouts. At various points, he’s been a legit No. 1 goalie. The interesting part is how up-and-down it’s been recently. Last season in Carolina’s regular season, it wasn’t all smooth. He went 16-14-5 with a .874 save percentage and a 3.05 GAA in 35 games. Some nights he looked fine, other nights not so much.
Then the playoffs hit, and it flipped. In the postseason, Andersen went 13-2 with a 1.89 GAA and a .913 save percentage, helping Carolina go on a deep run and win the Stanley Cup. Even though he got pulled late in the Final against Vegas, the bigger picture is pretty clear—when the games tighten up, he can still give you real stability. That’s probably what Edmonton is betting on here. Not the regular-season version, but the playoff one.
One other thing worth remembering here is the connection between Andersen and Mike Babcock. They go back to their Toronto days with the Maple Leafs, where Andersen was Babcock’s number-one goalie for a few seasons. So there’s already a bit of history and familiarity there.

But There’s More Going on than Andersen with the Oilers
Of course, this isn’t happening in isolation. The Oilers also brought in Devon Levi earlier in the day. Now, suddenly, Oilers fans are looking at Andersen, Levi, and Tristan Jarry all in the same mix. That’s a lot of goalies for one team, and it feels like the situation is still being sorted out rather than settled.
And that’s where the Jarry question hangs over everything. Is this just competition and see what happens in camp? Could be. Is there a bigger plan here—money, movement, or a reshaping of the depth chart before the season starts? Also possible. You even hear buyout scenarios mentioned when teams start stacking goalies like this, even if nothing is confirmed.
Either way, the timing isn’t random. Two goalie moves in a day usually tells you that the organization is still trying to figure out what it wants in net.
Andersen Brings Value and Stability to the Oilers
Andersen is a solid veteran addition. But it also feels like part of a bigger goalie picture that’s still coming into focus.
And until that settles, the Jarry question isn’t going anywhere. If he stays with the team, the training camp could be very interesting.
