Insider Doesn’t Hold Back on Sergei Bobrovsky’s Poor Play
Doug MacLean has concerns about Sergei Bobrovsky’s play in Toronto. Are the Maple Leafs being patient, or waiting too long to act?
Toronto Maple Leafs fans have been watching Sergei Bobrovsky closely, and there hasn’t been much to reassure them lately. The veteran goaltender hasn’t looked particularly comfortable, and some of the goals getting past him have raised eyebrows. But should Toronto worry already, or is this simply a rough stretch for a goaltender who’s been around long enough to know how to respond?
Doug MacLean discussed Bobrovsky’s early-season performance with Nick Kypreos and Justin Bourne, and he didn’t sound convinced things would turn around quickly. MacLean recalled speaking with Dale Tallon, the former Florida Panthers general manager who originally signed Bobrovsky to his big contract. MacLean recalled Tallon telling him that Bobrovsky struggled badly when he first arrived in Florida. In fact, MacLean said Bobrovsky’s early struggles were among the factors that contributed to Tallon’s eventual departure.
Interestingly, Bobrovsky later phoned Tallon to apologize for how things had gone. MacLean described him as a terrific person, someone Tallon still speaks very highly of. That’s worth remembering. Bobrovsky has had difficult stretches before and found a way through them.
MacLean Has Concerns About What He’s Seeing
Still, MacLean isn’t ready to give Bobrovsky a pass. He acknowledged that the Calgary game was particularly surprising, but said he had generally been underwhelmed by the goaltender’s play. Some of the goals going in, particularly shots finding the corners, have been difficult to watch.
Age is another consideration. At 38, Bobrovsky is being asked to carry a significant workload, and MacLean wondered how much the veteran can reasonably handle. There’s also the team in front of him. Toronto has been giving up too many chances, making life difficult for its goaltenders. Bobrovsky can’t be expected to solve every defensive problem himself.

Should Toronto Be Pulling Bobrovsky?
This was perhaps MacLean’s strongest point. He questioned why Toronto hasn’t been quicker to remove Bobrovsky when he’s having a particularly difficult night. His argument was straightforward: winning games matters more than protecting a player’s feelings or reputation. If a goaltender is struggling, there’s nothing wrong with giving the other option a chance.
That’s an interesting discussion for Toronto. Bobrovsky deserves some patience, but patience shouldn’t mean ignoring what is happening on the ice. The Maple Leafs need better goaltending, better defensive support, and some wins. Nobody needs to panic just yet, but the team can’t afford to wait indefinitely for things to improve.
