One of the things Toronto Maple Leafs fans are going to be watching very closely this season is whether Auston Matthews has truly bought into what John Chayka is building in Toronto. That’s hardly surprising. Matthews has been through it all. He’s been the superstar, the captain, the face of the franchise and, for better or worse, one of the people most closely associated with the Leafs’ playoff disappointments.

So when a new general manager comes in and starts changing the way the team is constructed, everyone naturally wants to know: Is Matthews on board?

New Maple Leafs GM John Chayka Gives a Big Insight About Matthews

Well, Chayka has now offered a pretty interesting answer. “It’s funny,” Chayka said, explaining how the relationship has worked. Normally, he said, you’re selling players on your plan. But with Matthews, “he’s getting us to buy in” and asking what is the right thing for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

That’s quite a sentence. Read it again, and the roles almost seem reversed.

The general manager isn’t talking about Matthews as someone who had to be sold on Chayka’s plan. He’s describing a captain who came into the conversation with his own thoughts about what the team needed. And maybe that’s exactly what leadership is supposed to look like.

Chayka said Matthews brings a different perspective because he’s been in the locker room, experienced the highs and lows and now wears the captain’s “C.” From Day 1, Chayka said, the conversation has centred on what’s best for the team and the organization, along with a complete commitment to doing whatever it takes to win.

Reading Between the Lines About What Chayka Said About Matthews

There are probably two ways to read that. The first is the obvious one: Chayka is saying exactly what a general manager should say about his franchise player. It’s good relationship management. Matthews is the captain, the organization’s most important player, and the guy whose contract ties him to Toronto for years. Of course Chayka wants everyone to know they’re working together.

But there’s another way to read it, and that’s the more interesting one. What if Matthews really is exerting leadership at a much higher level than simply wearing the C and leading the team onto the ice? What if he’s sitting down with Chayka and saying, essentially, This is what we’ve learned. This is what we need. This is what will help us win.

That would be a pretty significant development for the Maple Leafs.

If This Read Is Correct, Matthews Is More Than Buying In

It also changes the meaning of “buy-in.” Maybe the question isn’t simply whether Matthews has bought into Chayka’s vision. Maybe Matthews himself has shaped part of Chayka’s vision. Nobody outside those conversations knows exactly how much influence Matthews has had. And it’s probably wise not to turn two paragraphs from a GM into evidence that the captain is running the hockey department.

Still, Chayka’s wording is hard to ignore. For years, the Maple Leafs have needed their best players to become bigger leaders when the games mattered most. Maybe that’s beginning in a place nobody expected — not on the ice, but in the room where the team is being built.
