Kylington was the first to put ink to paper, as he agreed to a two-year, $5 million deal that will carry an average annual value (AAV) of $2.5 million. The 25-year-old entered the 2021-22 season as an afterthought on the Flames blueline, but resurrected his career thanks to his great play. He put up career highs across the board with nine goals and 31 points in 73 games while averaging over 18 minutes in ice time per game. While he can still be prone to some ugly defensive miscues, he proved last season that he is more than capable of being an everyday NHL defenceman.

Later in the day, the Flames announced that they were also able to re-sign Mangiapane to a three-year, $17.4 million deal with an AAV of $5.8 million. This deal has been debated over the past few hours online, but in this writer’s opinion, it is a good one. The 26-year-old has improved in every season since entering the NHL, and is coming off of a 2021-22 campaign in which he registered career highs with 35 goals and 55 points, all while maintaining his very solid defensive play. If he is able to continue his upward trajectory, this deal could end up being a bargain for the Flames in short time.
By getting both of these deals done, the Flames were able to avoid heading to arbitration with both players. This could very well help save the relationship between the players and the organization, as arbitration has been known to be quite hostile at times. That particularly applies to Mangiapane, who was already forced to go through arbitration with the Flames once before. With this news, the Flames may very well be done with roster additions for the remainder of the summer, though they do still have a small amount of cap space to work with should they wish to do any more tinkering.
