Calgary Flames Sign Jonathan Huberdeau to 8-Year Extension

The Calgary Flames have signed Jonathan Huberdeau to an eight-year extension worth $84 million.

Per a report first broken by Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, ”Hearing #Flames and Jonathan Huberdeau are putting the finishing touches on an eight-year, $84 million extension. 8 x $10.5 million.” The Flames and the player himself confirmed the news just minutes later, locking in the forward and ensuring the organization is keeping at least one key piece to the Matthew Tkachuk trade.

Huberdeau’s got one more season remaining on his current deal, meaning his new contract will run from 2023-24 through 2030-31, and it’s the richest deal in Flames franchise history. His new contract includes a full no-move-clause in years 1-6, and it changes in years seven and eight to include a 12-team trade list as part of his NMC.

The contract breaks down as the following:

  • $7M SB, $3.5M Salary
  • 2. $7M SB, $3.5M Salary
  • 3. $7M SB, $3.5M Salary
  • 4. $9.5M SB, $1M Salary
  • 5. $9.5M SB, $1M Salary
  • 6. $7M SB, $3.5M Salary
  • 7. $9.5M SB, $1M Salary
  • 8. $5M SB, $5.5M Salary

As Jfresh of Twitter points out, “Huberdeau is a dynamic winger with elite passing ability whose up-tempo style has led to consistently excellent production and sub-par defensive results. An underrated scorer as well.” He adds, “Age curve isn’t pretty, term is a lot, etc., but in the short term at least this guy is as close to a one-to-one Gaudreau replacement as one could probably hope to find.”

Some will argue that this is not a great deal over the length of the term but one could also argue any deal given to Johnny Gaudreau would have looked bad too. What Calgary does with this deal is remove any doubt that the pieces they acquired in the Tkachuk deal will need to be traded before the season runs out.
