Insider Says Flames’ D-Man Could Bring Back “Ransom’s Request”
Nick Kypreos says Rasmus Andersson could fetch a ransom’s request is the Flames choose to trade him ahead of the deadline.
Rasmus Andersson has emerged as a cornerstone for the Calgary Flames, logging over 24 minutes per game and standing out as one of the team’s top producers. The Swedish blueliner has developed into a reliable top-pairing defenseman, leading a Flames roster that has exceeded expectations in a season many viewed as the start of a rebuild. For those reasons, among others, Nick Kypreos has him on his trade bait board and writes, “Andersson could bring back a ransom’s request to Calgary, especially if they moved him before he becomes a “rental” trade candidate next season.”
Under GM Craig Conroy, Calgary has undergone significant roster turnover, with Andersson being one of just four players remaining from the 2021-22 team. The latest talk is that the Flames want to re-sign him, but there could come a point where the offers are too good to ignore. And, if Calgary falls out of playoff contention, Andersson’s six-team modified no-trade shouldn’t stand in the way of the Flames getting the best possible return with multiple buyers.
Andersson has one year left on his contract beyond this season, making him even more attractive because he’s not just a rental and locked in at a team-friendly price of $4.55 million this and next season.
An Andersson Trade All Depends on Playoffs Hopes for the Flames
If Calgary remains competitive, Andersson will likely stay as a central piece of the team. However, should the playoff race fade, his name could surface in trade discussions more than it already has. Moving Andersson before he becomes a rental next season could yield a significant return, positioning the Flames well for their rebuild.
For now, Andersson’s leadership and performance are helping Calgary stay far more competitive than expected.
